Vesuvius in AD 79... ...during my visit here, I was amazed to see how advanced the city was in its heyday-complete with markets and guilds, sophisticated government and judiciary, gardens and theatres, temples and courts, restaurants and even brothels... ...here I have tried to capture the main square of Pompeii in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. 2000 years back probably, Mt. Vesuvius looked exactly as serene and calm as in this photograph, with the citizens of Pompeii going on with their lives as normal, when with no warning, all hell broke loose...
